3 Months Old and Bored – Max Hates Being A Baby

by RenaeMcAlister on November 8, 2007

Dear Max,
Things- they are a changing! This month has been difficult. We had a feeding issue with me having too much milk, which resulted in you screaming a lot. The issue has been resolved and things are great. This month you started something new and cute. While you are eating you will stop and turn your head and look at me and smile and then go back to eating. Sometimes you keep doing it so much that I have to try to not look at you so you will finish eating! It is adorable though.

You also have decided this month that you will not take a bottle. Last month you took one, but this month if I, or anyone else tries to put a bottle in your mouth you scream and kick and flail all over the place. I am not very happy about this. I am planning on coaching club volleyball in the spring and if you won’t take a bottle how am I supposed to leave you with someone else? If you continue not to take a bottle I may just have to start solids at 4 or 5 months instead of waiting until 6 months.

This month we started a little “sleep training”. I am trying to get you to go to sleep on your own. You have responded very well and last night after I fed you, you were completely awake and I put you in bed and you didn’t make a peep! It was a huge victory. Usually you have been “protesting” for anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes before going to sleep.

You have started to sleep longer at night. About 2 weeks ago I started letting you cry when you would wake up the first time to eat (after about 4-5 hours of sleeping) but then after about 7 hours I would go to you and feed you. Now you aren’t crying after 4-5 hours, you are sleeping 7-8 hours before waking up to eat! It is awesome. You still aren’t a very regular napper, but we are working on it and I know it will get better.

I have decided you are a high-maintenance baby. You get bored easily and when you do you yell- it is so funny. You love to go outside and look around, we go in the backyard a lot and watch the dogs or pick pecans or just walk around. You want to sit up so badly but you can’t on your own. You want to be able to grab things and put them in your mouth, but you don’t have enough control yet. You still squirm a lot and I noticed the knees of your sleepers have little worn spots on them. You have started to arch your back to try to wiggle out of the position you are in- I have to make sure if I leave you that you are strapped in. You love to watch the TV, but it bores you after a while. You love to be bounced up and down on my knee or on my shoulder. You hate being a baby. I think you will be more content when you can do things for yourself. I think you are going to be a very independent child.

You are smiling a lot more, and laughing (even though you won’t when there’s a camera involved). It makes it all worthwhile to see you smile or hear you laugh! I love you more everyday.
Love,
Mama
