Unfortunately a virus found my two year old and is giving him a run for his money. Tuesday and Wednesday Max was whining a lot, crying for no reason and pretty much just irritating me to no end. Thursday morning he woke up crying and burning hot. This was the first time I took his temperature and realized he was sick. I felt so bad for getting on to him for whining the previous days because there was obviously a reason for it, next time I won’t be so oblivious. Anyway, his fever got worse on Friday and I finally decided I should take him to the doctor just to make sure this wasn’t something worse, especially since we were hitting the weekend. When we went to the doctor he had lost 2 pounds since his 2 year check up that was a few weeks ago and his fever was 103. The doctor took one look at him and after reading his symptoms thought it was probably the flu. They tested for both the flu and strep throat just to be sure. Thankfully they were both negative. The doctor told me this is probably a virus and that by the end of the weekend Max should be good as new. So far he still is running a fever, but has small moments when he actually smiles and will eat a half a fruit snack. I am taking what I can get.
What do you do with a 2 year old all day when they won’t play, won’t eat, can’t sleep, and are miserable? You watch a lot of TV. Now let me first just say that Max does not usually watch much TV. I let him watch about 1-2 hours a day maximum and that doesn’t really mean watch so much as have some show he likes on in the background while he is playing. We usually have Sesame Street on in the morning and then we don’t turn the TV back on until after his nap when I let him watch one of his Bob the Builder DVDs. He really doesn’t “watch” an entire show yet because he would rather look at books or play with his puzzles, so I don’t mind turning on a show every now and then. For the past few days I just look at the sad look on his face and his rosy little cheeks and let him pick what he wants to watch, he is just so pitiful.
We have DVDs that Max has received as gifts and that is what we’ve been watching his week. We have played “Finding Nemo” at least 15 times in the past few days and encouraged it STRONGLY over Bob the Builder. If you have never seen Bob the Builder then don’t. I have found out that I can stomach children’s movies a lot easier than the little shows. I need to get him the Cars movie or something else just to have on hand for times like these. Needless to say, Max actually smiled for the first time in days when the nurse at the doctor’s office brought him some Finding Nemo stickers.
Some serious hand washing is going on at our house and I am praying very hard that Jake doesn’t get this bug. So be it if Cale and I get it but we are trying to sanitize everything so Jake stays healthy. Thursday was a late night of teaching for Cale and I almost lost my mind taking care of Jake and sick Max all day and evening by myself. God bless my mother for taking Jake on Friday for most of the day so I could give all my attention to Max and take him to the doctor without having to worry about Jake.
It’s times like these that I am indescribably thankful for healthy children, because even though it is awful right now, it is temporary. That being said, I am ready to see my sweet boy happy again!

This picture was obviously taken before he got sick.
